چکیده

Yuhuan Wu Chinese deletes non-final lexical tones within a small post-lexical tone domain, except HL if its syllable begins with a sonorant consonant. The explanation of this phonological specification lies in the number of tone contrasts in the location concerned (H, L, HL, ML and LH), which is higher than in syllables with a voiceless obstruent or zero onset (H, HL, LH) or in syllables beginning with a voiced obstruent (L, ML, LH). The interpretation as contrast maintenance is supported by features of two phonetic implementation rules which enhance tone contrasts. One enhances the incompleteness of the neutralization of tones in pre-final position, while the other enhances the ML-HL contrast in phrase final position.

Structure-dependent tone sandhi in real and nonce disyllables in Shanghai Wu

Disyllabic sequences in Shanghai Wu undergo different types of tone sandhi depending on their structure: phonological words (e.g., modifier–nouns) spread the initial tone across the disyllable, while phrases (e.g., nonlexicalized verb–nouns) maintain the final tone and level the contour of the nonfinal tone. We investigated the productivity of the two tone sandhi types through 48 speakers’ prod...

Complexities of Tonal Realisation in a Right-dominant Chinese Wu Dialect – Disyllabic Tone Sandhi in a Speaker from Wencheng

An acoustically-based description is given of the isolation tones and rightdominant tone sandhi in disyllabic words of a male speaker of the Chinese Oūjiāng 甌江 Wú 吳 dialect of Wénchéng 文成 . His seven isolation tones show typical Wu complexity, comprising two mid-level, two rising, two falling-rising and one depressed level pitch shapes. Typical too is his three-way voicing contrast in syllable-...

Contextually dependent cue weighting for a laryngeal contrast in Shanghai Wu

Phonological categories are often differentiated by multiple phonetic cues. This paper reports a production and perception study of a laryngeal contrast in Shanghai Wu that is not only cued in multiple dimensions, but also cued differently on different manners (stops, fricatives, sonorants) and in different positions (non-sandhi, sandhi). Acoustic results showed that although this contrast has ...

Structure-Dependent Tone Sandhi in Real and Nonce Words in Shanghai Wu

Disyllabic sequences in Shanghai Wu undergo different types of tone sandhi depending on their syntactic structure: modifier-noun compounds spread the initial tone across the disyllable, while verb-noun phrases often maintain the final tone and neutralize the nonfinal tone, especially if the phrase has a low frequency of occurrence. We investigated the productivity of the two tone sandhi types t...

A Unified Account of Mandarin Tone 3 and Tone 4 Sandhi

Traditional analyses viewing tone 3 sandhi as categorical change fail to account for differences between sandhi tone 3 and tone 2. A new analysis claiming that tone 3 sandhi is a tonal reduction is proposed within the OT framework. In the present analysis both tone 3 sandhi and tone 4 sandhi are viewed as tonal reductions and the same basic set of constraints are used to accommodate both tone s...
